Sheet music became commonplace in homes starting about 1840. Postcards came along some years later, but when the songwriters put their pens to a score postcards and music were a perfect match.

In the early 20th century, cities across America publish directories of their local businesses. New York led the way, and it is in those directories that the history of postcard publishers can be found. Their advertisements are very telling of how and when they did business.
