Hospital ships often have long and colorful histories. Most are converted vessels that were once freighters, cruise ships, and one of the first was a brig, a two-masted, square rigger. A hospital ship is also one of the most important vessels in any naval fleet. It has been suggested that more postcards are mailed from hospital ships than any other ship in any navy.
