“Gun Boat Quilt” was a term given to the raffle quilts made by southern women in order to finance the building of gun boats needed during the Civil War to protect the ports of the southern states and the shipping lanes in and out of southern harbors. This is part of the story.

In today’s world, sports heroes are several and varied. Sixty-plus years ago, when Stan Musial played baseball, he too, was a hero to many fans for many reasons. He was admired not only for his ability with a bat and ball but for his character in playing America’s favorite pastime sport – Major League Baseball.
