An unknown wordsmith once proclaimed, “Legend is born on the nib of the pen.” This is a somewhat ambiguous metaphor, but like all things that grow without influence they tend to expand beyond control. Longfellow knew the legends of the New England watermen, but he couldn’t leave it be. He pushed and pushed and Hesperus was born. Sad to say, another tale of ego run amok.
